| FRANCINE PORAD
LIFE MEMBER BIOGRAPHY by Cheryl Leslie Smith Francine's petite stature and soft voice are in contrast to the enormous windows and vaulted ceilings of her modern apartment. Shapes of sunlight slice across and illuminate her larger than life works of art lining every wall. Layers of color and marks express her vast excitement and interpretation of events in her life. Betty Edward's book, Drawing on the Artist Within motivated Francine's inquisitive mind to search for the emotion derived by marks on paper. Her series of watercolors that followed continue to use this visual language, stirring the viewer's emotions. Titles of her watercolor series are "Water Ways," "Without End,"In Concert" and 'Web, Nest, and Other Resting Places." "I like to explore composition from a different view point, the challenge for me is breaking the rules," she explained. One of the professors Francine had in the University of Washington painting program asked: what would you do if you had the time to create anything you wanted? "He gave us the semester to do just that. The six portraits of my children were the product of that challenge," she said, pointing them out. Unlike many of the life members, Francine didn't start painting until she was forty. Her large family was trying to get her father-in-law interested in a hobby. They gave him art supplies of all media and Francine volunteered to go with him to classes. She became fascinated with art! "My son and I graduated from the University of Washington together," she said with mirth. Flora Correa was actively recruiting for Women Painters of Washington and theNational League of American Pen Women. Another Pen Women member, a professor of creative writing, felt creative disciplines are so closely aligned that if you could paint you probably could write and vice versa. Rhymes, stories and haiku poetry gave Francine another voice to express her fascination with life. Humor, wit, and descriptions of nature fill 24 books of published poetry and countless journals and notebooks. Collections of her written works are wide spread. The NW Watercolor Society acquired her rhymes and stories of art and artists collections, as did several other watercolor societies. Francine is a delightful conversationalist, a fantastic teacher and a wonderful artist in word and paint. She stated you are never too old or too young to create.
