Francine
Porad lives, writes and paints in the Pacific Northwest. Former
President of the Haiku Society of America; editor for eight years
of "Brussels Sprout", an international journal of haiku
and art. Porad holds a B.F.A. degree from the University of Washington;
and continues to attend workshops for writers and artists. She
has 22 collections of published haiku, and her haiku is in current
issues of publications in the U.S., Canada, Engliand, Croatia,
Australia, Romania and Japan. Haiku anthologies include HAIKU
MOMENT (Charles E. Tuttle, 1993), HAIKU WORLD: An International
Poetry Almanac, (Kodansha, 1996),1997 and 1998 RED MOON ANTHOLOGY
(Red Moon Press). Porad is a frequent award-winner, guest lecturer,
presenter, juror of national and international haiku/senryu/tanka
competitions.
It
is my pleasure to spotlight two selections of Francine Porad's
haiku. They reveal a rich tapestry of her life, and of the haiku
that is prominent in international journals from 1985 to the present.
It will be a joy for the poets who have read these haiku in the
original journals and Francine's collections to see them once
more, and a windfall for the new poets who started writing in
more recent years. Enjoy!
